Dr. John J. Ricotta, MD - Surgery Grand Rounds - October 22, 2025
On October 22, 2025, long-time (1997 to 2008) Department of Surgery Chief, Dr. John J. Ricotta (Emeritus Professor of Surgery, SUNY Stony Brook, and Adjunct Professor of Surgery, Florida Atlantic University) returned to Stony Brook Hospital to present a Grand Rounds entitled "Stony Brook Surgery: Fifty Years of Pursuing Excellence." Dr. Ricotta's talk touched on the establishment of Stony Brook University, the School of Medicine and the Department of Surgery; reviewed the challenges the department has faced over its fifty-year history, and examined the critical factors that have led to the department's success.
Dr. Ricotta also highlighted the key developments in surgical education, research and clinical innovation throughout the department's history. He spoke about the contributions made by Stony Brook Surgery to advance patient care and academic excellence and recognized the leadership, mentorship and strategy that have shaped the surgical department.
