Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center at 星空无限传媒 was created to provide individuals with Crohn鈥檚 disease and ulcerative colitis the best possible multidisciplinary care available today. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists aims to take care of patients from childhood to adulthood, from medical to surgical therapy, in a seamless, cohesive environment.

Since IBD can be associated with inflammation outside the bowel (extra intestinal manifestations) we have referral connections with many other specialists in the institution such as rheumatology, dermatology etc. to allow quick access to consultations.

In addition, Stony Brook University Hospital provides state-of-the-art imaging services, including CT enterography and MR enterography. Expert laboratory professionals and pathologists trained in gastrointestinal pathology are also part of the team.

We are committed to research that will lead to a cure and improve the lives of our patients. Members of the center are actively involved in clinical research and new drug trials in addition to hosting the yearly of America (CCFA) walk for a cure.

Our educational mission is fulfilled by training, not only adult and pediatric fellows and surgical residents, but also by hosting educational programs for community healthcare providers.

Diseases Treated

We provide advanced evaluations, diagnoses and treatment of the following gastrointestinal conditions, disorders and diseases:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a group of diseases. The two major types are:

  • Ulcerative Colitis is a disease where the lining of the large intestine (colon) becomes inflamed and develops open, painful wounds (ulcers).
  • Crohn鈥檚 Disease can be found in any part of the digestive tract and the inflammation caused can extend much deeper into the layers of the intestinal walls.

Clinical and Diagnostic Services

After we review old records and obtain a thorough clinical history and examination, we determine and provide the most effective course of treatment to reach the best possible outcome by using cutting edge Gastroenterological (GI) tools, techniques and therapies to evaluate Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

  • Colonoscopy and Chromoendoscopy 鈥 A test that enables your Gastroenterologist to examine the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon) as well as the lower part of your small intestine, using a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope, which has a small video camera and light attached to it. A colonoscopy helps find ulcers, colon polyps (precancerous growths), tumors and areas of inflammation or bleeding. During a colonoscopy, tissue samples can be collected, (biopsy) and abnormal growths can be taken out. A long history of colitis is associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. Special colonoscopic procedures using dye spray and special lights can improve visualization of abnormalities.
  • Upper Endoscopy 鈥 A minimally invasive procedure involving a medical device that consists of a tube or a capsule that has a light and a video camera, which enables a physician to examine the stomach and first part of the small bowel, take samples and, in some cases, provide therapeutic treatment.
  • Wireless Capsule Endoscopy 鈥 Also known as a 鈥減ill cam,鈥 this non-invasive test uses a pill-size capsule that contains a camera to record images of the small bowel. It is used to diagnose Crohn鈥檚 disease as well as other disorders of the small intestine.
  • Advanced Endoscopy 鈥 The use of specialized medical expertise and technically advanced tools to evaluate, diagnose and treat complications of IBD such as strictures and disorders of the liver and biliary system. For more information, view the Interventional Endoscopy Center at Stony Brook.
  • Nutrition Therapy 鈥 Also known as medical nutrition therapy (MNT), includes tips on healthy eating, and special diets such as gluten-free diets, and diets for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and IBD, which can improve a patient鈥檚 health and quality of life.
