Gynecologic Oncology

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is led by Dr. Michael L. Pearl and is the only academic gynecologic cancer program in Suffolk County. Dr. Pearl is specially trained and board certified in women’s health, gynecologic cancer care, and hospice and palliative medicine. He is also a member of several national medical organizations. Dr. Melissa Henretta joined the division in 2011 after completing advanced training in gynecologic oncology at the University of Virginia and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Joyce Varughese joined the team in 2013 after completing her gynecologic oncology training at Yale School of Medicine.

The Gynecologic Oncology team has three main goals. The first is to provide complete, team‑based care for women who have or may have gynecologic cancers, including cancers of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vulva, vagina, fallopian tubes, and related areas. The team also cares for women with complex gynecologic conditions and early pre‑cancerous problems. The second goal is to conduct research to better understand these cancers and improve how they are treated. The third goal is to educate healthcare professionals and the community about gynecologic cancers and conditions that can lead to cancer.

Each year, the division cares for a large number of patients. ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½ 720 new patients are seen annually, and the team performs around 520 surgeries and provides about 540 chemotherapy treatments. In addition, the division completes nearly 3,600 office visits each year, showing a strong commitment to patient care, research, and education.
